International Women’s Day 2024: "Invest in women: Accelerate progress"
International Women's Day, originally known as International Working Women's Day, is observed each year on March 8. The Socialist International, convening in Copenhagen, established this international day to commemorate the women's rights movement of 1910. In 1911, this day was observed in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Since then, numerous countries have joined. This year marks the 100th anniversary. It is a day to celebrate women's achievements across national borders, ethnicities, linguistics, cultures, economics, and politics.
Cambodia has also joined this event and declared the day a public holiday. Women’s rights are recognized in the National Constitution. The article No. 35 states that “Both Cambodian sexes have their rights to participate in political, economic, social and cultural activities of the Nation”.
On International Women's Day, some Cambodians go out to eat or to a resort in Cambodia, while others stay at home and enjoy time with their families.
In some families, husbands cook or wash dishes on this day even though they are preoccupied with other duties. They simply keep their loved ones from working since they believe that day is unique for ladies, particularly their loving wives.
"I am going to buy a gift and bring her [wife] outside for dinner," Mr. Choun Thou, a TV host, said.
For some Cambodians, International Women's Day is simply a holiday to celebrate with their families, with no social or political significance.
"I just want to enjoy a warm supper with my family, but my father is overseas recovering from illness, and my mother is accompanying him. Mr. Kim Sung Vibol, a frequent social network user, said it's no fun to be alone in Phnom Penh. "I sadly see other people and families stay, eat and laugh together, they're so happy."
Even though 8 March Day is a global holiday, it is observed differently in each country. During this day, all men in Russia will buy flowers, send text messages with good wishes to their partners and female friends, or give them their wishes in person. In Italy, International ladies' Day is known as Festa della Donna, and men traditionally offer ladies a yellow mimosa bouquet, a popular flower with a fresh blend of orange, green, and yellow blossoms.
